British Fossils takes its social and environmental responsibilities very seriously.
We are SEDEX Registered and ensure all our suppliers comply with applicable ethical and environmental regulations. Wherever possible, the Company Directors have also visited and inspected the mines and factories that produce our goods worldwide.
Unlike some large-scale mining or quarrying operations for precious stones or metals, the extraction of our ‘gift-grade’ stones is low-scale and low-tech at locations that are not environmentally sensitive. Some of our material is a by-product of other mining activities (e.g. fossil shark teeth from phosphate mines - which would otherwise become fertiliser).
The production of our goods provides vital work and income for often impoverished local communities. Our rocks, minerals, and fossils, although attractive and educational, are all ‘common’ and occur in essentially inexhaustible quantities - the Earth’s crust is, after all, entirely made up of rocks and minerals!
Any specimens we come across that are rare or of scientific value are donated to museums and we ourselves engage in research resulting in several scientific papers a year. We do not work with any materials from living organisms, such as coral or shells, which could have an environmental impact.
We are close to our target of making all of our packaging reusable and fully recyclable.
